BRADSELL’S second consecutive Group 1 victory in the Flying Five Stakes in Ireland was the highlight of a magical September that yielded three other Pattern victories for Archie and Saxon Gate.
Our star sprinter supplemented August’s success in the Nunthorpe Stakes by dominating a big field at The Curragh on Irish Champions’ weekend, making his jockey Hollie Doyle the first female rider to win a Flat race of that status in Ireland.
Bradsell, who is now on target for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar later in the autumn, wasn’t the only Group winner to be prepared by Archie and the team, as Aesterius completed a remarkable double for owners Wathnan Racing.
He landed the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg at Longchamp on 1st September before following up in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger Festival – both times under Wathnan’s jockey James Doyle.
Meanwhile, their Hello Youmzain colt Electrolyte was successful in the Group 3 Prix Eclipse at Chantilly in the hands of French ace Mickael Barzalona. You can read more about the success of all three horses on this site.
On the domestic front, success continued when Jonny Allison’s Calanthe obliged for Hollie in a mile handicap at Lingfield Park just 24 hours before Basalt followed up for Hollie and owners Primavera in a mile novice stakes at Newcastle.
There were also wins for the Overbury Stallions owned Premium Pass in a five-furlong dash at Wolverhampton and Perfectly Timed in a 10-furlong handicap at Newcastle – Hambleton Racing’s three-year-old benefitting from the application of first-time blinkers.
On 27th September Ajdayet scored a notable success for Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, taking an extended mile handicap at Wolverhampton for Luke Morris on only his fifth career start. It was the scopey son of Ten Sovereigns’ first run since being gelded.
We also enjoyed success in Sweden when Throne Hall won a conditions hurdle at Bro Park for owners The Real Quiz and our leading amateur rider Brodie Hampson, but that trip was marred by the loss of our globetrotting star Outbox who was fatally injured in the Group 3 Stockholm Cup.
It was the fourth time he’d taken part in the race, finishing second on the first three occasions, and his loss was devastating for everyone at Saxon Gate, particularly his proud owners Hambleton Racing.
Outbox won eight of his 42 career starts, amassing over £775,000 in prize money. His most notable successes came in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket back in May, the Group 1 Amir Trophy in Qatar in February 2022 and the Listed Fred Archer Stakes back at Newmarket in 2021.
